Sen. Dahl announces retirement from government

State Sen. Gary Dahl (R-Granville) announced today he is stepping down after six years of service in the Illinois Senate. The resignation will take effect on December 10, 2010.

“It has been an absolute pleasure serving the constituents of the 38th District,” Dahl said. “It’s been a very humbling experience representing our communities in Springfield . However, after six years of representing our area, I feel it’s time to move on to a new chapter in my life – one where I can spend more time with my family and loved ones.”

Dahl, a local businessman and owner of Double D Express, a trucking company and Double D warehouse LLC, was first elected to the Senate in 2004, beating longtime incumbent Sen. Patrick Welch (D-Peru) in a come-from-behind victory. He was reelected to the seat four years later.

“For most of my life, going into politics was furthest from my mind,” Dahl said. “I was content raising a family and running a business. But there came a time when I saw how out-of-touch Springfield had become and said ‘enough was enough’ and decided to get involved. From my first day of public service, I always viewed myself as a citizen-politician, rather than as a career-politician.”

Looking back on his tenure, the Senator says he’s proudest of his office’s constituent services outreach in helping local residents deal with the problems they encountered with state government.

“In my opinion, helping constituents is the heart of what being a lawmaker is all about,” Dahl said. “Legislators should be accessible and accountable to constituents as much as possible, and assist them in grappling with the government bureaucracy. Government should work for the people, not vice-versa.”

During his time in office, Dahl donated his legislative salary to charity – money that was donated to various charities throughout the 38th District. A US army veteran, Dahl also took a leading role in getting more funding to renovate and draw additional nurses to the LaSalle Veterans Home, which had been critically understaffed for years.

Among the Senator’s other accomplishments – sponsoring legislation making November RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) Awareness Month to help raise awareness of the painful neurological disorder, as well as various measures aimed at reforming state government and shedding more sunshine into the legislative process.

Dahl’s successor will be chosen by a vote of the Republican County Chairmen in his district. Sen. Dahl represents all of Grundy and Putnam counties, as well as parts of LaSalle, Bureau, Kankakee , Will, Iroquois and Livingston counties.

To whomever that person is, Dahl offered some words of advice:

“Stay true to yourself and your beliefs,” Dahl said. “And above all else, stay true to the people who you represent.”

Sen. Dahl highlights November as RSD Awareness Month

PERU, Ill. – November is RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy) Awareness Month, a time to inform the public about the difficulties sufferers of the disease experience, says Sen. Dahl.

The Senator recently welcomed RSD advocate Bea Danko to his district office to present her with a copy of House Bill 9 – a measure she inspired that establishes the RSD Education Program to promote public awareness of the syndrome and the importance of early detection, diagnosis, and treatment. The Senator sponsored the bill on Danko’s behalf, after attending her RSD support group and hearing about the difficult challenges sufferers face.

“It was really eye opening to me,” Dahl said. “People with RSD face tremendous challenges on a daily basis, both physically and emotionally. I sponsored the measure because it’s important we help raise awareness about this disease to not only help those who suffer from it, but to enhance early detection.”

RSD is a serious, often debilitating, neurological syndrome that impacts more than 500,000 Americans. Symptoms include burning pain, changes to bones and skin, tissue swelling and extreme sensitivity to touch that, if untreated, results in permanent deformity and chronic pain.

House Bill 9, now Public Act 96-0605, was approved by the General Assembly without opposition and signed into law in August 2009 by Gov. Pat Quinn.

Sen. Dahl named "Guardian of Small Business"

Citing his strong support of the small business community, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has named State Sen. Gary Dahl (R-Granville) a “Guardian of Small Business.”

The organization ranks every Illinois lawmaker according to their votes regarding small business and economic issues. Dahl received perfect 100 percent positive rating from the organization, 20 points above the 80 percent necessary to be named a Guardian.

“From day one, Sen. Dahl has truly been a guardian of the small business community in every sense of the word,” said NFIB’s State Director Kim Clarke Maisch.  “In Springfield, he has been a leading voice in saying ‘no’ to taxes and policies that harm economic growth and small businesses across our state. He understands that the best way to grow our economy, attract companies to Illinois and create high-quality jobs is for government to be an advocate for small businesses, rather than an adversary.”

“I am honored to receive this award. Small businesses are the economic engine of our state, and Springfield must do a better job of helping them grow and prosper,” Dahl said. “Right now, Illinois is notorious for having a very unfriendly business climate, which serves to drive away companies and the high-quality jobs they provide. It’s time for state government to start being an ally of economic development and business growth, rather than an adversary.”

NFIB has more than 10,000 small businesses members in Illinois. The organization works with the Governor, lawmakers and other elected official to foster a competitive business environment in the Land of Lincoln.
